In Gavin Newsom’s California, being a citizen apparently matters less and less, unless you’re paying taxes or obeying the law. Because now, thanks to Assembly Bill 930, noncitizens, including illegal immigrants, can help run elections in the Golden State. While U.S. citizens have to sit back and watch their votes get watered down by sloppy election rules, noncitizens can now sit at the table, literally, and help oversee democracy.
AB 930, recently signed into law by Governor Newsom, is being spun by Democrats as a way to “modernize and secure” elections. Translation: they’re making it even easier for people with no legal right to vote or influence elections to do exactly that. The bill, passed by a 59 to 16 vote in the California legislature, allows noncitizens to serve as election workers. You read that correctly. People who can’t legally vote in state or federal elections are now helping run them.
This is all on top of California’s already laughable voter verification system. In statewide races, including governor, citizenship is verified by… an honor system. There’s no requirement to show proof of citizenship. None. Just check a box, sign an affidavit under penalty of perjury, and boom, you’re on the rolls. According to a Santa Barbara County grand jury, the state doesn’t even ask for documentation. “We uncovered that there’s no requirement to provide proof of citizenship,” said foreman Andrew Brown. “You just sign off that line in the ballot.”
So while American citizens get to trust that everyone voting around them is “probably” legal, California’s bureaucrats are making sure no one checks too hard. And now, they’re inviting noncitizens to handle ballots, monitor polling stations, and participate in election administration. What could possibly go wrong?
This isn’t without precedent. San Francisco already allows noncitizens, including illegals, to vote in school board elections, a policy passed in 2016 and still limited to local education votes. Oakland tried to do the same but voters rejected it. Santa Ana voters also shut it down in 2024. But Newsom and the Democrats didn’t get the message, they just keep pushing.
The same legislature that called a bill requiring proof of citizenship “Hitler” and “fascist” is now patting itself on the back for “protecting democracy.” Only in California could letting illegal immigrants run elections be considered progress.
If this is what Democrats call “free and fair,” no wonder voter trust is circling the drain.
