Dem Senator Goes on Insane Rant About Trump “Threatening” Him

Democrat Senator Mark Kelly managed to hit a new level of melodrama this week, taking a routine press conference on Pentagon accountability and turning it into a full-blown pity-party performance. According to Kelly, President Trump is not simply criticizing him for urging the military to defy lawful orders, he is “threatening to kill” him. Yes, that’s actually what he claimed, straight-faced, as cameras rolled.

This comes after Kelly and the rest of the so-called Seditious Six decided it was a good idea to publicly lecture American servicemembers about “refusing illegal orders.” In practice, their little stunt sounded a whole lot like telling the troops to disobey their commander in chief based on nothing more than Democrat talking points and vague insinuations. It was irresponsible, dangerous, and exactly why President Trump blasted them for seditious behavior.

Kelly, for his part, has been pretending that his status as a retired Navy captain makes his comments noble. The Department of War didn’t see it that way. Last week the Pentagon confirmed it is weighing whether Kelly should be recalled to active duty so he can face a court-martial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Military retirees are still subject to the UCMJ, especially when they start telling troops to ignore orders they personally dislike.

So what does Kelly do when faced with actual accountability for statements that undermine military discipline? He accuses the president of trying to “silence” him and declares that Trump wants him dead. This is classic political theater, the type of thing Democrats fall back on when facts aren’t on their side. Trump’s comment that seditious acts can carry the death penalty under federal law wasn’t aimed at Kelly specifically, and Kelly knows it. But playing the victim is easier than defending his reckless behavior.

The Pentagon’s language was clear. Retirees who interfere with the military’s loyalty or discipline fall under federal statutes like 18 U.S.C. § 2387, which prohibits encouraging troops to abandon their duties. The department reminded everybody that lawful orders are presumed lawful and that personal political philosophy doesn’t give anyone a free pass to disobey them.

Kelly is trying desperately to spin this as Trump punishing him for “speaking truth.” The reality is simpler. If you tell the armed forces to reject the chain of command, don’t be surprised when the military justice system takes an interest. And if Kelly thinks calling Trump a murderer is going to save him, he might want to rethink that strategy.
