During an interview earlier today on ABC News, Senator Adam Schiff once again delivered his greatest hit. According to Schiff, Republicans, led by President Trump, are preparing to cheat in upcoming elections, undermine democracy, and refuse to accept defeat if things do not go their way. It was the same lecture Americans have heard for years, just dusted off and presented as urgent wisdom.
Schiff argued that questioning election procedures or advocating for reforms like voter ID is not legitimate oversight, but authoritarian behavior. In his telling, asking how ballots are handled, who is voting, and whether safeguards are working is somehow a prelude to tyranny. That claim would be easier to swallow if Democrats applied the same standard consistently. They do not.
When Republicans raise concerns about election irregularities, ballot harvesting, late night vote dumps, or inconsistent procedures, the response from Democrats is immediate and absolute. Those concerns are dismissed as conspiracy theories. The phrase “election denial” gets deployed like a club. Media allies announce there is no evidence, the conversation is over, and even questioning the system is portrayed as dangerous.
Yet when Schiff accuses Republicans of planning to cheat, without presenting evidence, the claim is treated as a noble warning. There are no calls for restraint. No solemn lectures about undermining public trust. Apparently, unfounded accusations are only a threat to democracy when they come from the wrong side.
Schiff went further by claiming efforts to secure elections amount to voter suppression. Requirements like proof of citizenship or photo ID were framed as sinister tools designed to disenfranchise millions. That position puts Democrats well outside the American mainstream. Poll after poll shows overwhelming support for voter ID. Nearly every developed democracy on the planet uses it without drama.
What Schiff carefully avoided mentioning is the documented record of election misconduct that does exist. Ballot harvesting abuses, improper voter registrations, forged signatures, and illegal voting prosecutions are real. They are not imaginary. They also tend to benefit Democrats far more often than Republicans. Ignoring that record does not make it disappear.
The deeper irony is that Democrats accuse Republicans of undermining trust while actively doing exactly that. Schiff’s interview repeatedly suggested that half the country cannot be trusted to participate in normal election oversight. He portrayed legal challenges, legislative debate, and reform proposals as signs of authoritarian intent. That message does far more damage to public confidence than any demand for transparency ever could.
President Trump’s position has been consistent for years. Elections should be simple, secure, and transparent. Clear rules, verifiable ballots, and equal enforcement strengthen democracy rather than weaken it. If Democrats truly believed elections were beyond reproach, they would welcome safeguards instead of fighting them. They would engage critics instead of silencing them.
Schiff’s rhetoric is a reminder that, for today’s Democrats, questioning elections is only unacceptable when the questions come from Republicans.
