GOP Congressman Unleashes Plan to Expel and Deport Ilhan Omar

Washington theatrics are back in full swing, this time with a Florida Republican floating an idea that has zero chance of passing but plenty of symbolic punch. Rep. Randy Fine says he is considering forcing a House vote to expel Rep. Ilhan Omar, a move that would require a two thirds majority and therefore a miracle. That has not stopped Fine from making noise, and frankly, that seems to be the point.

Fine told Axios he is “actively considering” introducing articles of expulsion, despite acknowledging the long odds. Expelling a sitting member of Congress is rare for a reason, and Democrats are not about to turn on one of their own, no matter how toxic she has become. Still, Fine made clear he is not just venting on social media. He says if he calls for expulsion, it will be in writing, not in some breathless fundraising email.

Ironically, it was one of Omar’s own fundraising emails that helped spark this. Her campaign suggested Fine should be expelled for remarks in which he said Muslims should be “destroyed.” Fine responded by saying he will not play the same game, but if expulsion is on the table, he will bring the paperwork. He also cited Omar’s long denied allegations and what he called her “general embrace of Muslim terror,” adding bluntly, “I don’t think she should be a citizen, let alone a member of Congress.”

Omar, predictably, brushed it off. “I don’t think anybody takes that man serious,” she said, adding that nobody should worry about anything he says. That is rich coming from someone who has spent years courting controversy and then acting shocked when people respond.

This is not Omar’s first disciplinary rodeo. She has clashed repeatedly with Republicans, faced censure attempts, and was removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2023 over her relentless attacks on Israel. None of that slowed her down. If anything, it turned outrage into a business model.

Fine, meanwhile, has built his brand as an unapologetic supporter of Israel and a relentless critic of lawmakers he believes excuse or minimize terrorism. Since arriving in Congress earlier this year, he has not bothered with subtlety. That has made him a lightning rod for Democrats, especially Omar, one of Israel’s fiercest critics on Capitol Hill.

This latest standoff says more about the state of Congress than the fate of any expulsion vote. Disciplinary tools are increasingly used as political statements rather than serious mechanisms for accountability. Everyone knows this vote would fail. That does not mean it is meaningless. Sometimes forcing a vote is about drawing lines and making records, not winning.

Whether Fine follows through or not, the episode highlights how broken the House has become. Substance takes a back seat to spectacle, and even when the outcome is predetermined, the fight itself becomes the headline.
