Michelle Obama Goes Off on “White Folks” in Latest Interview

Michelle Obama is back on the media circuit, which apparently means America must once again sit through the same well worn routine about how life has been an endless struggle of navigating white people, their expectations, their beauty standards, their everything. Every time she releases a book, the script never really changes. The press swoons, the interviews get softer than a hotel pillow, and Michelle takes the opportunity to remind everyone how exhausting it is to exist in a country that made her a multimillionaire global celebrity who lived in the White House for eight years.

This time she sat down with Tracee Ellis Ross, who treated her like she was delivering sacred wisdom instead of retreading the same talking points she and her husband have repeated for years. Michelle talked about childhood lessons on how black kids supposedly had to present themselves to white people just to avoid getting accused of stealing. She went on about carrying the right bag, speaking the right way, and playing defense just for walking into a nicer part of town. According to her, simply showing up in front of white people meant you had to be on guard to save your life. That is quite a tale. Most Americans grew up dealing with normal kid problems like bad haircuts or cheap sneakers, not the melodrama she describes.

Then came the familiar hair lecture. She said that being First Lady was just another job where she had to conform to a white standard of appropriateness. She insisted she hid her natural hair for eight years because the country was not ready for it and she did not want to cause a distraction. This is the same country that twice elected her husband, yet she thinks braids would have sent everyone into shock. She even shifted into a direct scolding of white people, explaining that black women straighten their hair to meet white beauty standards and claiming they are trapped by that straightness. For someone who says she wants unity, she spends an impressive amount of time dividing the country by hair texture.

People magazine joined the parade with more passages from her book, highlighting her ongoing fixation with racial differences every time she looks in a mirror. She talked about her Princeton years with braids and how she felt those braids were unacceptable in the White House. It is always the same narrative, that America is just too biased and too fragile to handle Michelle Obama’s hair.

For someone who insists this country is full of people who judge her appearance, she sure spends a lot of time encouraging them to.

  • She is uncomfortable in her own skin. If she were proud of herself, she should stand up and BE herself, not trying to be someone or something else. Stop with the phony-baloney. She is her own worst enemy. No sympathy for her.
