If you want a glimpse of where the Democratic Party’s activist wing wants to go in 2028, look no further than Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Among the party’s hard left base, she has become something close to the dream candidate for the next presidential cycle.
This development is not exactly shocking. Ocasio-Cortez has spent months building what looks suspiciously like the early framework of a national campaign. Her joint “Fight Oligarchy” tour with Sen. Bernie Sanders has taken the two progressive icons across the country, delivering fiery speeches about wealth inequality, corporate power, and the usual list of grievances that animate the socialist wing of the party.
To the far left, Ocasio-Cortez is the natural heir to Sanders’ political legacy. Sanders has spent years energizing younger voters and progressive activists with calls for sweeping government programs like universal health care and massive federal spending initiatives. Ocasio-Cortez carries the same ideological banner, but with a much younger face and a huge social media following.
Behind the scenes, Democratic strategists aligned with the progressive movement are already discussing the possibility of her running for president in 2028. According to a report from Axios highlighted by Breitbart News, some of her allies believe she could quickly emerge as a top tier candidate.
They believe she could poll within the top five among Democratic contenders and raise well over $100 million for a national campaign. That kind of financial backing would immediately make her a serious player in a crowded primary field.
The thinking among these activists is that the political environment is shifting in their favor. They point to recent progressive victories in places like New York City, including the rise of figures like Mayor Zohran Mamdani, as evidence that the country is ready to embrace a more openly socialist agenda.
Axios summed up the argument this way: “There’s a window of opportunity for a left-wing nominee that may not come again for a generation.”
Of course, not everyone inside the Democratic Party is thrilled with that idea. Moderates already worry the party has drifted too far left, especially in national elections where swing voters still matter. A presidential campaign centered on democratic socialism could deepen those divisions.
Some political strategists believe Ocasio-Cortez might have another goal in mind. Even if a presidential run falls short, it would dramatically boost her national profile and fundraising ability. That could position her for a Senate run in New York whenever Sen. Chuck Schumer eventually retires, or perhaps even a primary challenge against him.
One strategist bluntly summed up that possibility, saying, “I think she’ll plan to run for both and end up a senator.”
Either way, the growing push for Ocasio-Cortez shows how much influence the progressive movement now holds within the Democratic Party. Whether that energy helps Democrats nationally or drives the party further away from the political center is a question that will likely shape the 2028 race.
