Something ugly is bubbling up in Minnesota, and it is no longer possible to dismiss it as a one-off scandal or a paperwork mistake. What started as a massive fraud scheme tied to Somali-linked nonprofits is now creeping straight into the offices of some of the most powerful Democrats in the state. Governor Tim Walz. Representative Ilhan Omar. And now Attorney General Keith Ellison. This is starting to look less like coincidence and more like a pattern.
Walz and Omar are already facing scrutiny related to the broader Somali fraud scandal, which has involved staggering amounts of stolen taxpayer money. But the spotlight is burning brightest on Ellison, whose role as the state’s top law enforcement official makes the allegations especially alarming. Ellison is accused of taking political donations in exchange for helping shut down or slow-walk investigations into fraudulent operations tied to Somali-run organizations. If that is true, it is not just corruption. It is a betrayal of public trust at the highest level.
About a week ago, reports surfaced suggesting Ellison was caught on audio discussing political money in connection with enforcement decisions. Now things have escalated. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has publicly confirmed the existence of what he called “disturbing tapes.” According to Bessent, those recordings appear to show Ellison taking political dollars in exchange for stopping investigations. That is not a vague accusation. That is a direct claim from a sitting cabinet official.
Bessent did not stop there. He issued a warning that sounded less like speculation and more like a promise. “When the bear trap snaps, we’re going to get these folks,” he said. That is not the language of someone guessing. That is the language of someone who believes the evidence is already locked in.
"There are evidently some disturbing tapes of @AGEllison in meetings with people who donated to him — them calling for political favors to stop the investigations," says @SecScottBessent.

The audio referenced by Bessent has only added fuel to the fire. The more people hear it, the harder it becomes to pretend this is just political noise. It fits too neatly with what Minnesotans have already watched unfold. Billions potentially stolen. Oversight failures everywhere. And now, allegations that the attorney general himself may have helped bury investigations while campaign checks cleared.

This scandal has already embarrassed the state. If the allegations against Ellison are proven true, it will go far beyond embarrassment. It will confirm that Minnesota’s political class protected its own while taxpayers were robbed blind.
The public has heard enough promises, denials, and carefully worded statements. What they want now is action. Subpoenas. Indictments. Arrests. Accountability, not press conferences.
If the bear trap really is about to snap, then it is time to stop talking and start enforcing the law. No more excuses. No more protected classes. No more pretending this is normal. Hold them all accountable.
