President Trump hasn’t even hit the 100-day mark in his second term, and yet the question already echoing through Washington like a cannon blast is this: Can Trump serve a third term?
If you ask the mainstream media, they’ll say it’s not possible. If you ask constitutional lawyers, you’ll get long-winded answers about the 22nd Amendment. But if you ask Team Trump? They’re already flipping through the Constitution like it’s a legal jigsaw puzzle, hunting for a way to keep Trump in the Oval Office well beyond 2028.
And according to multiple reports, they may have found something.
CNN’s Elie Honig said this week that Trump’s lawyers are examining the precise language of the 22nd Amendment — the one passed after FDR won four terms and the Democrats decided no Republican should ever get that much power again. It states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
Here’s the kicker — elected. That’s the key word.
The theory being floated is that Trump could run not as president in 2028, but as vice president — perhaps alongside a hand-picked MAGA loyalist like JD Vance. If they win, Vance resigns, and Trump ascends to the presidency through the line of succession. Not elected… just promoted.
Now, the 12th Amendment tries to slam that door shut by saying anyone “ineligible” to be president can’t run for vice president. But Trump’s team thinks the wording might be vague enough to work with — or challenge.
It’s not a sure thing, but since when has “not a sure thing” ever stopped Trump?
President Trump himself isn’t shying away from the idea either. Just this past Sunday, he told NBC News, “I’m not joking” about the possibility of serving beyond two terms. When asked how, he cryptically replied, “There are methods.”
Well, if anyone’s known for bending the establishment into knots, it’s Trump.
Some constitutional scholars say the plan is legally dead on arrival. Others admit it’s a gray area that could be tested in the courts. But one thing is clear — Trump and his inner circle, including legal fixer Boris Epshteyn, aren’t waiting for permission. According to the Wall Street Journal, Epshteyn has been quietly studying strategies to avoid Trump becoming a “lame duck” ever since late 2023.
The truth? No one knows how this ends. But if Trump has taught us anything, it’s that he doesn’t play by D.C.’s old rules. And for millions of Americans who think he’s the best president in modern history, four more years just doesn’t sound like enough.
