President Trump’s administration keeps proving that competence and personality can actually coexist in the same White House, something we didn’t see much of before he showed up. His team isn’t just effective, it’s built on real friendships, the kind where people can actually laugh together instead of pretending they don’t secretly hate every meeting. And Vice President JD Vance just gave everyone at the Christmas party a behind the scenes story that captured that dynamic perfectly.
According to Vance, he and Marco Rubio were in the Oval Office discussing something serious with President Trump when everything suddenly took a detour. As Vance told it, “Today I’m in the Oval Office with the President and Marco Rubio, and we’re talking about something really important. The President kind of holds up his hand and says, ‘no, no, no, hold on a second. There’s something much more important. Shoes.’”
Trump then leaned over the Resolute Desk, gave them the presidential once over, and delivered a line only he could pull off. “He peers over the resolute desk and he says, Marco, JD, you guys have shitty shoes.” The room erupted when Vance told the story, and honestly, you can’t blame them. Only Trump could pause a major meeting to roast his own vice president’s footwear.
But the story got even better. Vance continued, “He goes out and grabs a catalog. There happens to be another politician in the room I won’t say who, and you’ll find out why in a second. And he actually runs us through this incredible shoe catalog. The President is gifting us with four pairs of shoes.” Imagine being so offended by someone’s shoes that you immediately solve the problem with retail.
Then came the kicker. Trump asked for sizes. “He says, Marco, what’s your shoe size? And Marco’s apparently an eleven and a half. He says, JD, what’s your shoe size? My shoe size is 13.” So far, so normal. But then they asked the mystery politician, who quietly said his size was seven. That was all Trump needed. As Vance put it, “The President leans back in his chair and says, you know you can tell a lot about a man by his shoe size.”
