It looks like John Bolton might be in a little more trouble than just being universally disliked by both sides of the aisle. The former national security advisor best known for his mustache, war hawk tendencies, and backstabbing President Trump is now facing serious heat after FBI agents raided his office and found highly classified documents, including materials marked “secret.” And no, this isn’t a rerun of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago raid or Biden’s garage folder fiasco. This time, it’s Bolton’s turn in the spotlight.
According to court filings just made public, the FBI executed a raid on Bolton’s downtown D.C. office on August 22 and discovered a collection of sensitive U.S. government documents. Topics ranged from weapons of mass destruction to strategic communications and the U.S. mission to the United Nations. Pretty heavy stuff for a guy who was supposedly retired and busy trying to stay relevant on MSNBC.
An accompanying raid at his Bethesda, Maryland home didn’t yield more classified papers, but agents did seize a bunch of electronic devices including several computers which might be even more damning, depending on what’s hiding in those inboxes. Let’s not forget: Bolton has a history of letting sensitive information “slip.” He was already sued during the Trump administration for his tell-all book The Room Where It Happened, which a federal judge warned could have violated security clearances. But naturally, the Biden DOJ dropped that investigation in 2021. Funny how that works.
Now the Espionage Act is back in play, and Bolton is under investigation for potentially gathering, transmitting, or losing national defense information. Not exactly the résumé booster he had in mind when he distanced himself from President Trump in a desperate attempt to earn respect from the D.C. cocktail circuit.
The FBI’s inventory which was only made public after Politico and others sued, includes classified records so sensitive that parts were redacted entirely. And here’s the kicker: this all came after revelations that Bolton’s AOL account (yes, he still uses AOL) was hacked by a foreign entity. How comforting.
Meanwhile, the Trump case? Dismissed after President Trump won re-election. Biden? Let off the hook completely, with special counsel Robert Hur painting him as a “well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory.” That’s the actual legal defense now…senility.
But Bolton? He doesn’t have Trump’s political power or Biden’s “harmless grandpa” narrative. All he’s got now is a legal mess, a hacked email, and a very uncomfortable mustache ride to the courthouse.
