Democrat Politician Says Trump’s Deportations Are the Right Move for America

Democratic Rep. Jared Golden of Maine is taking a markedly different stance from many of his fellow Democrats by publicly backing the federal immigration enforcement operation sweeping through his home state, even as criticism mounts in his district. Golden says he supports the effort — dubbed “Operation Catch of the Day” — so long as it remains narrowly focused on targeting individuals with criminal histories.

In a statement released Wednesday, Golden said he believes a targeted law enforcement mission aimed at people “who have engaged in criminal activities” serves the public interest and aligns with federal responsibility to uphold immigration law.

His position sets him apart from local leaders in Lewiston and other parts of Maine, where critics argue the operation has been heavy-handed and intrusive. Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline has accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of showing “a complete lack of humanity and concern for basic human welfare,” saying the city stands for the dignity of all its residents.

ICE itself has confirmed that its enforcement activities are ongoing across Maine. Federal officials told Fox News that roughly 50 people had been arrested so far, and DHS officials say about 1,400 immigrants statewide are on the agency’s target list as part of the effort.

The broader operation comes amid heightened national debate over federal immigration enforcement. Critics point to a recent deadly confrontation in Minneapolis, where a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent shot and killed Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, during an attempt to detain an undocumented immigrant. DHS said agents were carrying out a targeted arrest at the time and that Pretti resisted violently, prompting a defensive response. That incident has fueled intense scrutiny over ICE and CBP tactics nationwide, from Minneapolis to Maine.

Golden, who represents Maine’s more conservative-leaning 2nd District, is navigating that politically sensitive landscape by emphasizing that his support hinges on strict limits. In his statement, he stressed that “free speech and lawful protest are protected rights” but warned against obstructing law enforcement. Golden also called on federal authorities to comply with legal due process and avoid targeting immigrants with lawful status.

The congressman’s stance has drawn attention not only because it diverges from local leaders like Sheline, but also because it contrasts with other members of Maine’s delegation. Rep. Chellie Pingree, another Democrat, has urged a reduction of ICE agents and demanded more information about the enforcement operation while protesting in Lewiston.

The political split reflects broader national tensions over immigration policy, enforcement priorities, and the role of federal agencies like ICE. Golden’s qualified support highlights those divisions even within his own party.
