A Democratic congresswoman from Florida has apparently vanished from Capitol Hill for nearly a month, and the silence surrounding her absence is fueling growing questions about transparency, age, and leadership inside a party that spent years lecturing everyone else about those exact issues.
Rep. Frederica Wilson, 83, has not cast a vote in the House since April 17, according to congressional records cited in multiple reports. That means the longtime Florida Democrat has now missed 43 consecutive votes without any meaningful public explanation from her office.
Naturally, this is becoming difficult for Democrats to ignore, especially while they are trying to position themselves as the responsible alternative heading into the 2026 midterms.
Wilson represents Florida’s 24th Congressional District, a deep-blue seat covering parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties. She has served in Congress since 2011 and has represented the current version of the district since 2013. Over the years, Wilson became known for her colorful hats, outspoken media appearances, and reliable support for Democrat leadership. But lately, the congresswoman has been noticeably absent from the one place voters actually elected her to be: Congress.
The issue reportedly gained traction after veteran congressional reporter Jamie Dupree flagged Wilson’s voting record and noticed something odd with her official social media activity. Photos posted to her account appeared to show older events, with some reportedly matching images from previous public appearances, including a Service Academy Day event from last year.
That is not exactly reassuring.
At the moment, Wilson’s office has refused to clarify whether she is dealing with a health issue, a personal matter, or something else entirely. No timeline for her return has been provided. Meanwhile, constituents in her district are effectively represented by an empty chair while major legislation and committee work continue moving through Congress.
And yes, the optics here are brutal for Democrats.
For years, the media and Democratic Party leaders hammered Republicans over questions involving age, health, stamina, and transparency. Every time an older Republican lawmaker stumbled over words or disappeared from public view for a few days, it became a weeklong cable news event complete with dramatic music and “constitutional crisis” commentary.
Now Democrats find themselves relying heavily on an aging roster of lawmakers while struggling to explain why one of their own has disappeared from Washington for weeks without public accountability.
Wilson currently serves on both the House Education and Workforce Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Reports indicate she has not appeared in recent hearing footage from either committee.
Adding even more awkwardness to the situation, Wilson is reportedly running for reelection in 2026 despite the current mystery surrounding her absence. She is already facing a primary challenger, small-business owner Christine Sanon-Jules, who argues the district needs fresh leadership.
While Wilson’s seat is unlikely to flip Republican in a general election, the situation taps into a broader concern voters increasingly have about elderly lawmakers remaining in office long after questions about their ability to serve begin surfacing publicly.
For now, though, the biggest question remains unanswered: where exactly is Frederica Wilson?
