As Minnesotans were being ripped off to the tune of an estimated $9 billion in a massive Somali social services fraud scheme, House Republicans say something else was quietly happening in the background. The personal fortune of Ilhan Omar and her husband was exploding, and now Congress wants answers.
The House Oversight Committee has launched a deep dive into Omar’s sudden surge in family wealth, with Chairman James Comer confirming that staff attorneys are weighing whether to subpoena Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett. Comer did not mince words, saying the numbers simply do not add up. Republicans want to know how Omar and Mynett went from nearly broke to potentially worth as much as $30 million in just a single year, based on Omar’s 2024 financial disclosure.
“There are a lot of questions as to how her husband accumulated so much wealth over the past two years,” Comer said. “It’s not possible. It’s not.”
Federal law enforcement is also circling. A law enforcement source confirmed investigators are examining political figures potentially connected to the Minnesota fraud scandal. The source added that unlike during the Biden years, “Team Trump is on top of it,” a pointed remark that suggests this investigation will not quietly disappear.
At the center of the scrutiny is Rose Lake Capital, an investment firm Mynett co founded in 2022 with partner Will Hailer. According to court filings tied to a related lawsuit, Rose Lake had a jaw dropping $42.44 in its bank account in late 2022. By the following year, Omar’s disclosure valued the firm at up to $25 million. That kind of overnight transformation would be rare even in Silicon Valley, let alone from a firm with no visible track record.
Wall Street insiders consulted by The New York Post described Rose Lake as a glaring red flag. The firm is not registered with the SEC and does not disclose how much money it manages. Its website claimed its officers had prior experience managing $60 billion in assets, an astonishing figure that somehow escaped notice across the financial industry. A former senior SEC official said those claims alone raise serious disclosure issues.
Several prominent figures once listed as advisers to Rose Lake have quietly vanished from its website, including former Senator Max Baucus. Baucus said he had only one phone call about a potential deal and later found the communications “fishy.” Others, including former Rep. Collin Peterson and former Trump administration envoy J. Peter Pham, said their involvement was minimal or nonexistent.
Republicans say the timing cannot be ignored. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer pointed out that convicted fraudsters helped fund Omar’s campaign, making the explosion of family wealth even more suspicious.
This is no longer about politics. It is about math, timelines, and money that seems to appear out of nowhere while taxpayers were being robbed blind. House investigators now have one job, follow the money, wherever it leads.
