Kyle Kennedy, granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy

RFK Family Devastated After Granddaughter Dies Unexpectedly at Just 42

The Kennedy family is mourning Kyle Kennedy, the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, who died at age 42. According to the report, Kennedy passed away on Sept. 21 at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts.

Her death came nearly six years after a severe spinal cord injury in 2020 left her with long-term paralysis, disability, and other medical challenges. The New York Post reported that she spent those final years working to remain active in the lives of her children while facing circumstances that would have tested anyone.

“The years that followed brought struggles but Kyle fought to maintain her dry wit and determination through it all, trying to be the best possible mother to her sons and caring for her two beloved, ill-behaved Wheaten terriers,” her obituary read.

That description offers a remarkably human glimpse into her life. The mention of the ill-behaved terriers adds a small bit of personality to a heartbreaking remembrance, because even a formal obituary cannot hide the ordinary family chaos that keeps life moving.

Kennedy was one of 34 grandchildren of Robert and Ethel Kennedy. She was the daughter of Michael LeMoyne Kennedy, who died at 39 after being fatally injured in a 1997 skiing accident in Colorado. She also lost her infant daughter, Josie, the twin sister of her son Conor, who is now 12. Josie died “after a few short days of life,” according to the obituary.

Despite those losses, Kyle Kennedy built a life centered on education, family, and service. She grew up in Cohasset, Massachusetts, attended Milton Academy, and later studied at Georgetown University. A semester abroad in Florence, Italy, left a lasting impression, developing her deep love of Tuscan Renaissance art and her lifelong talent for making pasta dishes from scratch.

Kennedy earned a master’s degree in early education from Pace University and another master’s degree in education policy from Harvard. She spent two years with Teach for America, working in New York City public schools, an experience that launched her career in education.

NBC News reported that Kennedy later became an advocate for equitable elementary education and charter schooling. Her obituary said, “She went on to become a passionate advocate for more equitable elementary education and charter schooling, later working with technology companies focused on reforming and improving school curricula, and as a coach for educators working with young students,”

Like many members of her famous family, Kennedy enjoyed outdoor activities and sports. She ran the 2019 Boston Marathon under her married name, Kyle Kerr. After her 2020 spinal cord injury, however, she spent the remaining years of her life unable to walk while continuing to raise her children and advocate for people living with disabilities.

Her death comes nearly one year after the death of Caroline Kennedy’s daughter, Tatiana Schlossberg, who was 35. For the Kennedy family, the latest loss closes another painful chapter in a family history marked by public service, personal tragedy, and extraordinary endurance.
