Trump Drops the Hammer on Colombia’s Socialist President

President Trump announced on Sunday that his administration is moving to take action against Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s pro-Maduro leftist president. It’s about time someone in the U.S. did. Petro, who proudly describes himself as a socialist and has a past rooted in the communist M-19 guerrilla group, has been busy encouraging illegal aliens in the United States and calling for criminal proceedings against Trump himself. Yeah, because when you’re a dictator wannabe president, threatening your political enemies and meddling in another country’s policies are just par for the course.

Petro’s record is pretty much a playbook of “How to cozy up to Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro.” He’s been calling for the U.S. to lift all sanctions on Venezuela, echoing Maduro’s own dictatorial rhetoric and cracking down on pro-democracy activists inside his own country. And as if that wasn’t enough, Petro has gone so far as to warn the U.S. that military action against Venezuela would be “the biggest mistake,” implying that he prefers the Maduro regime over any attempts to restore democracy. Clearly, Petro’s sympathies lean heavily left AND pro-regime. It’s almost like he’s sort of obsessed with aligning himself with dictators instead of the people of Colombia.

His loose cannon tirades at the United Nations last month didn’t help his reputation. Petro ranted against the U.S. as an “imperialist” country and called for criminal proceedings against Trump, further fueling the narrative that he’s more interested in excusing Maduro’s brutal crackdown than promoting peace or stability. He even urged global civil unrest, urging citizens everywhere to stand up to a supposed “global oligarchy.” It’s almost laughable how he talks about democracy while openly aligning with regimes known for oppression.

But the real fireworks came with Trump’s announcement on Sunday morning. The president accused Petro of aiding Venezuela’s drug trafficking operations to the United States, and big surprise, he’s furious. Bitcoin-sized instead of lump sums, his statement claimed, “President Gustavo Petro, of Colombia, is an illegal drug leader strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Colombia.” He didn’t hold back either, saying Colombia’s drug business is now its biggest “industry” and that Petro does nothing despite US payments and subsidies that Trump calls “a long term rip off of America.” Well, Trump’s not exactly known for mincing words.

Trump then blew the lid on U.S. policy, declaring no more payments or subsidies to Colombia as of that very day. The goal? Stop the massive flow of drugs into America, which, let’s face it, has caused enough death, destruction and chaos already. Meanwhile, Petro’s low approval ratings in Colombia—dipping into the high 20s—must be a real confidence booster for him. Trump called him a “low rated and very unpopular leader,” warning Petro to shut down the “killing fields” or face American intervention. Yeah, because you simply don’t mess with U.S. borders and safety without consequences.

Adding to the drama, Petro’s son Nicolás Petro Burgos admitted in August to receiving illegal funds from drug traffickers during the 2022 campaign. Remember, this is the same guy who allegedly got paid off for promises to negotiate peace with armed groups—so, sort of a family tradition of shady dealings. Nicolás claims Petro didn’t know about the illicit money, and Petro fired his son from his advisory role. Ongoing investigations suggest more chaos is ahead.

The bottom line: Petro is a self-described socialist with a pro-Maduro, anti-democratic agenda, and Trump isn’t going to sit idly by while he encourages chaos and traffic drugs into the United States. It’s about time.
