New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani received a chilly reception Tuesday night when he appeared at a Staten Island community event honoring the New York Police Department, with many in the crowd loudly booing the mayor and cutting his remarks short.
The incident took place during the NYPD’s 43rd Patrol Borough National Night Out Against Crime at the Midland Beach boardwalk, where thousands of Staten Island residents gathered to support local law enforcement and participate in one of the city’s annual community policing events.
According to organizers, roughly 3,500 people attended the celebration, which featured food, family activities, and opportunities for residents to meet officers serving their neighborhoods. National Night Out Against Crime is held across the country each year to strengthen relationships between police departments and the communities they protect.
When Mamdani walked onto the stage, however, the mood quickly shifted.
Videos shared on social media showed many attendees booing as the mayor approached the microphone. Some members of the crowd shouted for him to leave the stage, while others voiced their displeasure with profanities. As the jeering continued, Mamdani attempted to address the audience but was only able to speak briefly.

Rather than delivering one of his typically longer public speeches, the mayor’s appearance lasted less than a minute.
Mamdani wished attendees a “Happy Night Out Against Crime” before the continuing boos largely drowned out his remarks. Video from the event showed the mayor smiling as aides escorted him away from the podium. Several attendees could also be seen giving thumbs-down gestures, while others turned their backs as he exited the stage.
The reception highlighted the longstanding political differences between Staten Island and much of the rest of New York City. The borough has traditionally been the city’s most conservative and has consistently demonstrated strong support for law enforcement and Republican candidates. Those political leanings have often put Staten Island at odds with more progressive leaders at City Hall.
Mamdani has faced criticism from police supporters throughout his political career over past statements and policy positions concerning law enforcement. His appearance at an event specifically dedicated to supporting the NYPD appeared to strike many attendees as an unusual choice, given those past disagreements.
Despite the hostile welcome, reports indicated that Mamdani remained at the event for a short time after leaving the stage and posed for photographs with several attendees before departing.
The annual National Night Out Against Crime events otherwise proceeded across the city as planned. The NYPD and city officials hosted more than 70 gatherings throughout New York City’s five boroughs as part of a broader effort to strengthen cooperation between police officers and the communities they serve.
Families attended neighborhood events featuring entertainment, children’s activities, food, and opportunities to interact with local officers. The goal of the campaign is to encourage partnerships between residents and law enforcement while promoting safer neighborhoods.
Still, it was the mayor’s reception on Staten Island that quickly became one of the evening’s biggest stories.
Videos of the encounter spread rapidly online, drawing reactions from both supporters and critics. Opponents of the mayor argued the crowd’s response reflected dissatisfaction with his political agenda and his relationship with law enforcement.
