President Trump welcomed several of the nation’s most powerful tech executives to the White House this evening for a private dinner, and the guest list raised eyebrows from the start. Among those seated at the president’s table were Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, with Gates taking a prominent seat next to First Lady Melania Trump.
At one point during the event, Trump invited Gates to speak, and the Microsoft co-founder quickly used the opportunity to promote his vision for “eradicating” disease through gene editing and vaccines. He referenced polio, HIV, and sickle-cell anemia as examples of conditions that he believes American innovation can defeat with new science. Gates also invoked Operation Warp Speed.
“We’re in the second phase of my career,” Gates said. “We’re working on innovation in health, in areas like vaccines or gene editing. The U.S. has the seeds, the same way Warp Speed took those seeds and put them together.” He added that his ambitions include using artificial intelligence to provide virtual doctors in Africa, advice for farmers, and educational tools for children.

While Gates painted a rosy picture, the reaction online was far more skeptical. Many observers noted Trump’s stiff body language, pointing out that the president nodded politely but appeared uneasy. Some questioned why Trump and Melania were seated directly between Zuckerberg and Gates, two men widely distrusted by conservatives. Others speculated that Trump’s decision reflected a “keep your enemies closer” strategy rather than genuine alignment.
Gates’ remarks touched a raw nerve because Operation Warp Speed remains one of the few Trump-era initiatives that continues to divide his base. Supporters revere Trump for his achievements in foreign policy, the economy, and border security, but many still feel that his early embrace of rapid vaccine deployment was misguided. Gates’ attempt to tie his vision for global health to Warp Speed only heightened suspicion that he is trying to exploit that legacy to push his own agenda.
Keep pitchin' Bill. You ain't gonna get a good reception. Trump likely is saying, "Bobby and I will talk about this."

Dear President Trump,
For the love of all things, do not align yourself with Bill Gates.

For his part, Trump has recently signaled a shift in tone. In comments earlier this summer, he called on pharmaceutical companies to release full transparency on vaccine data, suggesting he is no longer willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. That makes Gates’ pitch all the more striking.
Whatever Gates may be planning, President Trump is not easily fooled. If anything, tonight’s dinner underscored just how carefully he is navigating the minefield of global tech influence while keeping the American people’s interests first.
Gates is not a Dr so he shouldn’t be spewing off about gene editing!!!! He thinks he’s god and can cure everything with drugs and mutations to DNA!!!! Having cures for diseases is great but messing with what god created is wrong!!!! Stick to computers bill!!!
