President Trump has officially thrown his weight behind an unlikely but intriguing congressional candidate, and it is not your typical career politician. Marty O’Donnell, best known as the composer behind the iconic music of the Halo video game franchise, is now stepping into one of the most competitive political battlegrounds in the country, Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District.
Yes, that Halo. The same franchise that defined a generation of gaming now has its composer aiming for a seat in Congress. And with Trump’s endorsement, this race just got a whole lot more interesting.
Trump did not exactly hold back in his announcement, calling O’Donnell a “World-Class Composer and Entrepreneur” who understands America First policies. The endorsement highlighted familiar themes, cutting taxes, reducing regulations, promoting no tax on tips, and pushing for Made in the U.S.A. initiatives. In other words, the standard Trump playbook, now attached to a candidate whose résumé includes orchestrating one of the most recognizable soundtracks in gaming history.
🚨 I am truly honored to have the support of President Donald J. Trump!
The stakes this midterm could not be higher. That's why when I started running, I promised I would drop out unless President Trump supported me so that Republicans could avoid wasting resources on a needless… pic.twitter.com/AMmzZpjCw4

O’Donnell is not entirely new to politics. He ran in the 2024 Republican primary for the same seat and finished fourth with about 21 percent of the vote. Not exactly a breakout performance, but not insignificant either. What makes this run different is simple, he now has Trump’s backing, and in today’s Republican primaries, that can be the difference between an also-ran and a frontrunner.
He also secured an endorsement from Joe Lombardo, which adds another layer of credibility within state politics. That kind of support suggests this campaign is being taken seriously by party leadership, not just treated as a novelty.
The district itself is no easy prize. Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, currently represented by Susie Lee, is about as competitive as it gets, with a Cook Partisan Voting Index of D+1. That means it leans slightly Democratic, but not enough to feel safe. Lee managed to hold onto the seat in 2024 despite strong Republican performance nationwide, which tells you how tight these margins are.
Republicans, however, see an opening. Voter registration trends have started to shift, with the GOP recently gaining an edge over Democrats in the district for the first time in more than a decade. That kind of change does not guarantee victory, but it definitely puts the seat in play.
O’Donnell’s background is what really sets him apart. Before politics, he built a career in music and game development, working with Bungie on Halo and later Destiny, even collaborating with Paul McCartney. That is not your typical campaign bio, and it could either energize voters looking for something different or raise questions about experience in government.
Either way, this race is shaping up to be one worth watching. When a video game composer, a former president, and one of the most competitive districts in America all collide, you are not getting a boring election cycle.
