President Trump has given a new update on his proposed $5,000 “Trump Dividend,” and the promise comes with a very specific midterm condition. During a rally in Mississippi on Monday night, he said the payment would go to every adult American citizen if Republicans retain both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. Washington has apparently decided that even a cash payment needs a political scoreboard attached to it.
Trump said the total cost of the checks would be $1 trillion. He also said nearly $22 trillion has poured into the United States through new foreign and domestic investments, which he argued would make the payout “easily handleable.” That is not a small promise, unless a trillion dollars has recently become pocket change in the nation’s capital.
The White House has described the proposal as a $5,000 cash payment to every adult American citizen, made possible by the strength of the economy under President Trump’s leadership. The announcement was also presented as another example of Trump delivering on promises the so-called “experts” say cannot be done. His own explanation was direct: “Because we’ve done so well, and because our country is making so much money, only I can make this promise to you, and here is my promise: if the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate… I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”

Earlier in the day, President Trump offered a separate $1 million reward to anyone who reports voter fraud in an upcoming or past election, provided the report leads to an arrest and conviction. It is another proposal aimed at election enforcement, and it comes with a very high price tag. The stated requirement is arrest and conviction, which is a considerably higher bar than posting an angry claim online and calling it a day.
Trump said: “I’m also going to be issuing a $1 million bonus or reward or whatever you want to call it for anybody that reports voter fraud, leading to the arrest and conviction of somebody. We’re giving that person $1 million.”

NBC News reported that Trump did not specify where the money for the rewards would come from. A White House spokesperson offered no additional details and referred the outlet to Trump’s post. For now, the funding question remains unanswered in the announcement.
The administration has also dedicated significant resources to searching for noncitizens on state voter rolls. The Justice Department sued California officials in an attempt to force them to segregate mail ballots it says went to potential noncitizens. The report also notes that noncitizen voting is rare, according to studies.
The two announcements put money and election integrity at the center of Trump’s midterm pitch: a promised dividend for adult citizens if Republicans hold both chambers, and a reward for reports of voter fraud that lead to arrest and conviction. Whether voters like the price tag or the political condition, the terms offered Monday night were unusually direct.
