Two charter pilots flying over Ohio reported a strange encounter at 41,000 feet, where a silver object appeared near their aircraft and then failed to show up on the systems designed to track nearby traffic. That is not exactly the kind of surprise anyone wants while cruising through storm country.
The encounter happened on August 16 near Tiffin, Ohio, according to the National UFO Reporting Center’s public case file. The pilots were operating an empty private charter aircraft at Flight Level 410, or 41,000 feet. Around 8:01 p.m. Eastern, they were approaching a major storm system with cloud tops reportedly reaching between 53,000 and 55,000 feet.
The crew chose a gap between the clouds because it appeared to be the safest route. Their aircraft later encountered engine icing and moderate turbulence inside the weather system. Before entering the clouds, the captain, identified as “J” in the case file, saw something slightly above their altitude and directly ahead of the plane.
At first, the captain estimated the object was about five miles away. During a later interview, he said it may have been closer, perhaps two or three miles ahead, when he first noticed it. The pilots believed it was holding near 43,000 feet and moving northwest while their aircraft traveled southeast.
The object passed to the left of the aircraft on what the captain described as a parallel, opposite-direction track. He said it looked like a smooth, vertical metallic “pill,” with the same width at the top and bottom. There were no visible wings, lights, seams, creases or control surfaces. Based on the aircraft’s length of just over 40 feet, the captain estimated the object stood roughly 30 feet tall.
Its surface appeared polished and highly reflective. The captain believed the brightness came from sunlight reflecting off the object, not from any light it produced. The crew’s collision-avoidance system showed no nearby aircraft, and the captain’s ForeFlight display also showed nothing matching the object they were watching.
About a minute into the sighting, the captain contacted Cleveland Center. He asked whether another aircraft or a weather balloon was operating in the area. According to the case report, the controller said no identified aircraft or non-reporting object appeared on radar where the pilots saw it. Radar is supposed to be the boring, reassuring adult in the room. In this case, it did not offer much reassurance.
The object passed behind the aircraft and remained visible for roughly another minute. The encounter lasted about two minutes while the charter plane traveled at approximately 380 miles per hour. The captain took an iPhone photograph after the object had moved away, when he estimated it was about seven miles behind the aircraft.
The photograph shows a small reflective object, but it cannot settle the question. It was taken after the closest portion of the encounter, and a distant object in a phone picture offers limited detail. The pilots’ account provides more context, including the reported shape, the estimated altitude, the lack of matching cockpit data and the real-time call to air traffic control.
The Daily Mail reported that the crew continued watching until the object disappeared behind them. The case remains a report of an unusual sighting, not a final answer about what the pilots saw. The sensible approach is to separate the intriguing details from the unanswered questions, even when the radar screen seems determined to make the mystery more interesting.

For those asking why it says, "Made with AI", that's because we labled the CGI recreation photos as having been computer generated. X would not allow the video to be posted unless that was affirmed. The radio communication and other images are 100% raw, obtained via FOIA.
