Political debate between a man and a woman

Democrat California Gubernatorial Candidate Admits Real Reason They Love Sanctuary Cities

California Democrats have spent years insisting that sanctuary state policies are all about compassion, inclusion, and protecting vulnerable communities. According to their carefully polished talking points, refusing to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement is simply the enlightened, humane thing to do. Nothing political about it at all. Totally selfless. Pure as freshly fallen snow.

Then gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter stepped onto a debate stage and accidentally said the quiet part out loud.

During Tuesday night’s California governor debate, Porter openly admitted that illegal immigration has become one of the primary reasons California’s population continues growing. Considering roughly 10 million residents have reportedly left the state over the last decade, her comment landed like a bowling ball through a glass coffee table.

“These are Californians,” Porter said while defending sanctuary policies. “They contribute to our economy, they pay taxes, and they’re one of the only ways our state has been growing in recent years.”

Well, there it is.

For years, conservatives have argued that Democrat leaders benefit politically from mass illegal immigration while pretending there is no political incentive whatsoever. Porter’s comments unintentionally gave that argument a giant flashing neon sign.

The debate centered around California’s sanctuary state policies, which limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Porter defended those policies by arguing that taxpayer-funded state resources should not be used to assist federal immigration enforcement efforts.

“It’s the job of the California governor to protect every single Californian,” Porter said.

That statement immediately raised another obvious question, namely whether politicians are prioritizing citizens or simply anyone who happens to cross the border illegally and settle in the state. California Democrats increasingly seem unwilling to draw any distinction between the two.

Social media exploded after Porter’s remarks circulated online. Conservative commentators pointed out that California has experienced a massive exodus of residents due to soaring taxes, high housing costs, crime concerns, burdensome regulations, and the general joy of paying $9 for a loaf of artisan bread while sitting in traffic for three hours.

The Libs of TikTok account summed up the conservative reaction bluntly by posting: “Katie Porter accidentally admits out loud that Californians are fleeing California and are being replaced by imported illegals.”

That may sound harsh, but the underlying political concern is real. Republicans, including President Trump, have long argued that Democrats oppose stronger immigration enforcement partly because population counts affect congressional representation. Under current census rules, noncitizens are included in population totals used to determine House seats and Electoral College votes.

That means states with large illegal immigrant populations can potentially gain additional political influence in Washington.

Naturally, Democrats dismiss that argument as conspiracy thinking. But when politicians openly celebrate illegal immigration as a source of population growth while millions of legal residents flee the state, they are not exactly helping themselves beat the accusations.

Porter’s comments also highlighted the uncomfortable reality California leaders rarely discuss publicly. The state is losing residents at an alarming pace despite its natural advantages, beautiful weather, enormous economy, and cultural influence. Americans are leaving because many no longer believe the state is livable or affordable.

So instead of asking why citizens are packing moving trucks for Texas, Florida, and Tennessee, California politicians increasingly seem focused on replacing the population losses however they can.

Apparently that now qualifies as a campaign talking point.
