Fox News’ abrupt split with longtime anchor Maria Bartiromo has turned into more than another cable-news personnel shakeup. The departure has spilled directly into Washington, with Trump administration officials publicly criticizing the network and questioning how it is handling coverage involving President Trump.
Fox News Media announced that Bartiromo was leaving after more than 12 years with the company. The network’s official statement offered little explanation, saying only, “We thank Maria for her work over the last 12 ½ years and wish her all the best on her next chapter.”
That remarkably brief farewell was notable considering Bartiromo’s prominence. She hosted “Mornings with Maria” on Fox Business, “Maria Bartiromo’s Wall Street,” and “Sunday Morning Futures” on Fox News.

But the political controversy surrounding her exit quickly became considerably louder.
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said during a Newsmax appearance that the administration contacted Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott after Bartiromo’s departure.
“But suffice it to say that Suzanne Scott got a call, and basically the White House let her know that that kind of thing is totally unacceptable,” Navarro said.
Navarro went even further in his criticism of Fox leadership.
“She just went out and fired Maria Bartiromo,” Navarro said of Scott. “And that place is out of control.”
Not exactly the kind of statement that leaves much room for wondering where Navarro stands.
Navarro subsequently accused Fox News of “suppressing MAGA news” and imposing a “shadow ban” on some of President Trump’s surrogates. His criticism transformed what could have remained an internal network personnel matter into a very public fight over Fox’s editorial direction.
Reports surrounding Bartiromo’s departure have suggested that internal editorial communications played a role. Several news organizations reported that Bartiromo shared details about Fox’s internal editorial directives with White House officials.
Fox’s public announcement, however, did not provide a detailed explanation for why the relationship ended. That leaves a considerable gap between what has been reported about the circumstances and what the network has officially said.
The controversy comes amid broader tensions involving Fox News and the Trump White House over coverage of President Trump’s election-related claims. Those disagreements reportedly intensified after a July prime-time address in which President Trump discussed election vulnerabilities and alleged Chinese interference.
That background makes Bartiromo’s departure particularly significant.
Bartiromo has long been one of Fox’s most recognizable personalities and has interviewed President Trump and numerous administration officials over the years. Her programs regularly covered economic policy, trade, immigration, national security and the administration’s political agenda.
Vice President JD Vance also reacted to the news by praising Bartiromo personally while declining to wade deeply into Fox’s personnel decisions.
“I love Maria. I think she’s an amazing person, amazing talent,” Vance said.
He described Bartiromo as a “very, very dear friend” and predicted she would succeed in whatever she decides to do next.
Navarro clearly took a less diplomatic route.
His comments also illustrate how unusual the relationship between Fox and the Trump administration has become. Fox remains enormously influential among Republican voters, but that does not mean administration officials are going to quietly accept editorial decisions they believe disadvantage President Trump or his supporters.
Meanwhile, Fox has already begun reshuffling its programming. “Mornings with Maria” has transitioned to “Mornings with FOX Business,” while Bartiromo’s other programs are being handled by replacement or rotating hosts.
The biggest unanswered question remains exactly what happened behind closed doors.
Fox has confirmed the separation. Reports have offered explanations involving internal editorial information. Navarro has made the White House’s displeasure impossible to miss.
And Bartiromo’s full account of what happened has yet to publicly settle the controversy.
For a network that has spent decades covering political drama, Fox News suddenly finds itself squarely in the middle of some of its own.
