Podium with 2028 sign behind it

BREAKING: Top Democrat Announces Decision on 2028 Presidential Run

One governor is attempting to put the brakes on growing speculation about her political future, declaring this week that she will not run for president in 2028 when her second term as governor comes to an end.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer made the remarks during an interview with WJBK-TV (Fox 2) at the annual Mackinac Policy Conference, one of Michigan’s premier gatherings of political, business and policy leaders. Speaking with Fox 2 reporter Roop Raj on the front porch of the historic Grand Hotel, Whitmer offered perhaps her clearest statement yet regarding a potential White House bid.

“There will be a robust group of people running for president; I will not be one of them in 2028, I can tell you that,” Whitmer said.

The comment comes as both political parties are already beginning to look ahead to the post-President Trump era and the next open presidential race. With several high-profile Democrats expected to weigh campaigns in 2028, Whitmer has frequently appeared on lists of potential contenders due to her national profile and prominence within the Democratic Party.

Instead, Whitmer said she intends to take time away from elected office once her tenure as governor concludes.

According to the governor, she has sought advice from political figures across the ideological spectrum regarding what comes next. Among those she mentioned were former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and former Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan.

“That’s the advice everyone says: ‘Take a little bit of time,’ and so that’s what I’m going to do,” Whitmer explained.

In Washington, taking time off after leaving office is often easier said than done. Political figures routinely insist they are not planning another campaign, only to find themselves pulled back into the spotlight when opportunities arise. As a result, some political observers may remain skeptical about any declaration made nearly three years before the 2028 presidential primaries begin.

Still, Whitmer’s comments were notable because they appeared unusually direct. Rather than leaving the door open or offering a carefully worded non-answer, she flatly stated that she would not be among the candidates seeking the Democratic nomination.

The timing is also significant. Several Democrats, including Buttigieg and former Vice President Kamala Harris, continue to generate speculation about possible national campaigns. Other prominent governors and cabinet officials are also expected to be discussed as potential contenders as the party charts its future direction.

For now, however, Whitmer says her focus remains on governing Michigan and finishing her current term. What comes afterward remains an open question.

Whether that future includes the private sector, academia, a policy organization, or another public role remains unknown. But according to Whitmer, one destination is already off the table: the 2028 presidential race.
