A bizarre and dangerous accident at a Nebraska gas station over the weekend is raising serious questions about firearm safety after a dog reportedly triggered a loaded shotgun inside a pickup truck, causing the weapon to discharge and injure a woman sitting at a nearby traffic light
According to local reports citing the Scottsbluff Police Department, the incident happened shortly after noon Saturday at the Short Stop gas station and convenience store located on Avenue I in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Authorities say the pickup truck had pulled into the parking lot when the owner stepped inside the store, leaving the dog alone in the vehicle.
Another passenger reportedly exited the truck as well but remained standing near the front passenger-side door. That detail became important very quickly.
Police say the dog was moving around in the back seat area when it somehow came into contact with a shotgun that had been left inside the truck. Investigators indicated the firearm apparently had a live round chambered at the time. That combination, an unsecured firearm, a loaded chamber, and an energetic dog bouncing around the cab of a truck, turned into a disaster within seconds.
The shotgun discharged through the front passenger-side door of the vehicle, sending pellets flying out of the parking lot and across nearby traffic. One of those pellets struck a woman who was sitting in another vehicle several yards away at a traffic light.
According to reports, the pellet hit the upper portion of her right arm, which was resting outside the window at the time. Thankfully, authorities said her injuries were not considered life-threatening. A family member reportedly drove her to Regional West Medical Center for treatment.
No other injuries were reported.
Still, the situation could have been dramatically worse. A shotgun blast fired in a populated area near traffic and businesses creates countless possibilities for tragedy. The fact that only one person suffered relatively minor injuries is incredibly fortunate.
Investigators also noted visible damage to the truck’s passenger-side door consistent with a shotgun blast, further confirming the sequence of events. Initially, police responding to the scene were reportedly told the incident may have involved a BB gun before learning a shotgun was responsible.
Naturally, social media immediately exploded with reactions ranging from disbelief to dark humor. Somewhere out there, every dog owner who has ever called their Labrador “a little clumsy” suddenly got very uncomfortable.
But underneath the bizarre headlines is a serious reminder about responsible firearm storage. Firearms and vehicles are common companions in rural America, particularly in hunting communities, but basic safety practices exist for a reason. Leaving a loaded firearm unsecured inside a vehicle, especially with animals or children present, creates unnecessary risks that can turn deadly in an instant.
The Scottsbluff Police Department says the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue examining how the firearm was stored and handled inside the truck. For now, one Nebraska family is simply grateful this strange accident did not end in something far worse.
